The Loss Prevention Practice and ChLPS Value Chain

Loss prevention refers to measures used to prevent business losses arising from theft, fraud, or other forms of malfeasance which could result in deaths, injuries, and economic damage or loss. Loss prevention techniques are the set of practices, methods and procedures that business organizations use to protect their assets, prevent avoidable losses and preserve their profits. Loss prevention is important and applicable in every business environment.

The aims of any loss prevention program are to maximize a business enterprise’s profits by better managing preventable losses, proactively determine risks associated with the business operations, and come up with preventive measures and mitigation strategies in order to eliminate the occurrence or minimize the negative impact of risks to the business. Most organisations employ their own in-house loss prevention team or use external consultants or security agencies to accomplish these objectives.

Professional associations offer valuable educational resources. Whether through examinations, certifications, in-person seminars, online training programs, classes, or conferences, these resources keep members informed about industry trends and issues. A professional association fosters a sense of community, allowing personal interaction with like-minded individuals.

Engaging with other members, attending meetings, annual conferences, and volunteering on committees all contribute to a rich experience.  At the Association of Chartered Loss Prevention Specialists of Canada, we believe that the career development and facilitation of professional training and certification is critical to personal and business success. We exist to make this happen. The Association also provides ongoing support and training for its members and certification holders.

The Association was founded by a number of people from the profession, who recognized the need to develop standards in Corporate/Business Loss Prevention practices, with the objective of providing a professional standard-setting body for Loss Prevention professionals, establish and promote high objective standards in the profession, as well as increase the number of trained and qualified personnel in this specialist field.

The Association of Chartered Loss Prevention Specialists of Canada sets the standards for excellence and ethics and is the principal source of professional development and accreditation in loss prevention in Canada. As the voice of the industry, ChLPS Canada is always at the table to enrich discussions surrounding policy and regulatory reforms in the Canadian loss prevention industry.
